FSU track teams win conference

The Florida State track program made a little bit of history Saturday in Miami.

Not only did the women's team become the second program to capture the triple crown in the ACC (winning the cross country, indoor track and outdoor track conference championships in the same season), but they helped pull off the school's first-ever sweep of the ACC Track and Field Championship as well.

Well, sort of.

The FSU women won their first conference title since 2000, while the men ended in a tie for first place with Virginia at 141 points.

"I'm real excited for the ladies," coach Bob Braman said "They did an unbelievable job. That's a big win. That's a really big deal."

The FSU women won the last two events of the meet to cruise to the championship with 160 points, 33 ahead of second-place Virginia Tech.

It was quite a bit closer on the men's side.

FSU trailed Virginia by four points heading into the final event of the day — the 4x400 relay.

The quartet of Kevin Williams, Charles Clark, Maurice Mitchell and Brandon O'Conner torched the field for a first-place finish and 10 enormous points. But Virginia's relay team finished third, picking up six points of its own to tie FSU at 141. So FSU, which won the past four conference championships, wound up sharing the 2009 title.
